Montaigne’s essay On Cannibals depicts the natives of Brazil in a much more favorable light than their French contemporaries, who were engaged in the horrors of religious civil war. Interestingly enough, Montaigne concludes that Europeans are incapable of seeing virtue and accomplishment in “people who don’t wear pants.” Explain what he means by this and describe why his statement was relevant and/or controversial at the time it was written. To what extent may Montaigne’s essays be regarded as satiric?
