This is one of the two required long-form essays in this course. Both essay assignments must be submitted in order to earn a grade of C or higher in this course.

Select one of the topics listed below.

Your essay should be double spaced and 1000-1200 words in length.

First paragraph: introduction with thesis statement.
Last paragraph: conclusion summarizing key points and restating the thesis statement.
Middle paragraphs (three or more): should each contain a topic sentence with relevant facts to support your informed opinion.
Essay must be created as a Word (.doc or .docx) or Rich Text (.rtf) file.
Compose a written response of 1000-1200 words that fully answers the question(s) asked. This essay should represent your personal reaction and opinions related to the material (philosophy, art, literature, religion) covered in the course with emphasis on social, historical, and cultural relevance (remember to establish appropriate context by focusing on the concepts covered in this course). If you include quoted or paraphrased information in your response, you must properly cite and reference the original source(s) using MLA Style.

The essay will be graded according to the Essay Grading Form (below). You should evaluate your essay against the grading criteria contained in the Essay Grading Form before submitting your completed essay.

Medieval people thought of truth as preexisting, that is, as handed down from antiquity in the form of biblical or classical writing. As far as you can tell, did Renaissance thinkers actually break with this point of view? Defend your answer with specific references to the assigned readings for this course.

“Almost all the art before the Renaissance was created by people for whom the notion of art did not exist.” Discuss this assertion, offering examples of the new self-consciousness and individualism of Renaissance artists.

In what ways does abstraction give power to African sculpture? Use illustrations in the text to cite specific examples. Can any similarities be found between African art and Native American totems? Describe and explain using specific details and examples from the readings.

Montaigne’s essay On Cannibals depicts the natives of Brazil in a much more favorable light than their French contemporaries, who were engaged in the horrors of religious civil war. Interestingly enough, Montaigne concludes that Europeans are incapable of seeing virtue and accomplishment in “people who don’t wear pants.” Explain what he means by this and describe why his statement was relevant and/or controversial at the time it was written. To what extent may Montaigne’s essays be regarded as satiric?
