Qualitative Research Designs

For the past 2 weeks, you have focused on the features and considerations of quantitative research designs. However, quantitative designs are not appropriate for all research questions. Perhaps you are concerned with how patients react when confronted with negative test results, or you wish to study how views on a certain health topic change over time. In each of these cases, the emphasis is more on understanding the thinking and experiences of an individual or group than on numerical measurements. For these types of questions, a qualitative or mixed methods research design is the most appropriate.

For this Discussion, you focus on the different types of qualitative research designs, when they are used, and why they are important.

To prepare:

  • Reflect on the comments made by Dr. Mauk in this week’s media presentation on the value of qualitative research in nursing.
  • Locate the journal Qualitative Health Research in the Sage Premier database in the Walden Library.
  • From this journal, select an article of interest to you that was published within the last 3 years.
  • Review the information on different qualitative research designs in Chapter 20 of your course text.
  • Determine what qualitative research design was used in your selected article and evaluate whether it was the best choice.
  • Consider ethical issues involved in the study and how the researchers addressed them.
  • Think about how using a quantitative design would have affected the type of data gathered.

Post  (1) an APA citation for the article that you selected and provide a brief summary of the content and the qualitative research design used. (2) Evaluate the appropriateness of the design, and explain how ethical issues in the study were addressed. (3)Analyze how the study would have been different if a quantitative design had been used.

barriers to effective communication

Barriers to Effective Communication

We face challenging barriers to effective communication in the healthcare field. As our world becomes smaller, we are in constant contact with patients, colleagues, or consumers from culturally diverse backgrounds and we need to develop our skills to improve effective communication.

Using the South University Online Library, search the following articles:

The Role of Nursing in Bridging the Gap between Managers and Physicians in Hospitals
Improving Communication in the Health Care Setting

Based on your research, answer the questions below writing at least five sentences per question in a Microsoft Word document. You need to think of a communication with a healthcare professional colleague to answer the following questions:

What barriers to effective communication could occur with a health care professional colleague who is culturally diverse? How can these barriers affect patient outcome when effective communication is essential?
What assumptions can you make about a healthcare professional colleague you do not know well? How can these assumptions impact your communication if your customs are different from your healthcare professional colleague's customs and you do not understand their customs completely?
How can you overcome language barriers or make assumptions not based on facts to increase team unity and motivation? How important is it for you to take responsibility and improve your cultural competence?

Now you need to think of a communication with a patient or a consumer and answer the following questions:

What specific language barriers can result when you communicate with a patient or a consumer who speaks limited English? How can you gather information or educate when language barriers are present?
How do you adjust to conflicting values or traditions from patients in a specific religion or culture? For example, patients who are Jehovah's Witness religion may refuse blood products or other religions may not eat pork. How do you adjust dietary restrictions communicating in a collaborative manner with the dietary department?
What are the benefits of a healthcare organization to provide cultural awareness and training for each employee to better understand and accept others? Does your current or past organization provide cultural awareness training? If not, what will be your recommendation to your management team?
Select one culture other than your own and describe how this culture may deal with death and mourning.

Support your responses with examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.

6531 WK 7 DISCU Pin It Consider the following case study:

A 52-year-old African American male presents to an urgent care center complaining of urinary frequency and nocturia. The symptoms have been present for several months and have increased in frequency over the past week. He has been unable to sleep because of the need to urinate at least hourly all day and night. He does not have a primary care provider and has not seen a doctor in more than 10 years. His father died when he was a child in an automobile accident, and his mother is 79 years old and has hypertension. The patient has no siblings. His social history includes the following: banker by profession, divorced father of two grown children, non-smoker, and occasionally consumes alcohol on weekends only.

To prepare:

•Review Part 13 of the Buttaro et al. text in this week’s Learning Resources.

•Review the case study and reflect on the information provided about the patient.

•Think about the personal, medical, and family history you need to obtain from the patient in the case study. Reflect on what questions you might ask during an evaluation.

•Consider types of physical exams and diagnostics that might be appropriate for evaluation of the patient in the study.

•Reflect on a possible diagnosis for the patient.

•Review the Marroquin article in this week’s Learning Resources. If you suspect prostate cancer, consider whether or not you would recommend a biopsy.

•Think about potential treatment options for the patient.

Post 1 to 2 page discussion on  a description of the history that you need to obtain from the patient in the case study. Include a list of questions that you might ask the patient. Then, describe types of physical exams and diagnostics that might be appropriate for evaluation of the patient. Finally, explain a possible diagnosis,If you suspect prostate cancer, consider whether or not you would recommend a biopsy,  as well as potential treatment options for the patient based on this diagnosis.

Discussion 6600 Goals

Consider the following scenario:
Isabel recently earned certifications offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the American Organization of Nurse Executives for nurse managers and leaders. She was especially proud of this accomplishment and was confident it would serve her well as she continued her career. At a conference last week, she had found herself talking with a colleague about certification. To her surprise, her colleague suggested that she look into certification through the Project Management Institute. It had not occurred to Isabel that she might need or want that type of certification, but upon further reflection she could see how important it was to be able to manage projects effectively. She wondered how pursuing this type of certification might further her professional development and lead to new opportunities down the road. At the very least, she decided it was worth exploring further.
As you are aware, numerous nursing organizations offer opportunities for professional development, community service, and information gathering. There are also many certifications you can obtain through professional societies or organizations. Certifications recognize an individual’s specialty area knowledge and skills and can lead to professional empowerment. By obtaining certifications, you can help improve your quality of practice and increase your earning potential.
In this Discussion, you consider development opportunities afforded through professional associations and examine how earning certifications can advance your career.
To prepare:
  • Reflect on your professional goals. These goals may relate to the practicum professional development objectives you established in Week 1, but you are encouraged to take a broader view of what you would like to accomplish in the immediate future, as well as five or 15 years from now. Identify at least one goal that is especially important to you.
  • Think about the benefits of becoming involved in professional organizations and obtaining certifications.
  • If you already have a specialty or clinical certification, reflect on how this has impacted the achievement of your professional goals thus far.
  • Review information about two or more of the professional organizations listed in the Learning Resources. Consider the following questions:
    • As you explore each organization’s website, review the mission, vision, and value statements. Also examine the strategic plan, if possible. How do these align with your interests and your professional goals?
    • Investigate whether the organization offers networking opportunities with fellow professionals. Is there a local or regional chapter you could join?
    • What are the potential benefits of obtaining a certification through each organization? Examine the criteria for certification.
    • Evaluate your readiness and desire to become certified through each organization. What hesitations, if any, do you have?
    • How and why might this certification be useful to you and/or enhance your professional development?
Post on or before Day 3 a description of one or more of your professional goals. Explain a certification provided by a professional organization that would be of interest to you. Explain how and why this additional certification would be useful to you and/or enhance your professional development. Evaluate your readiness to obtain this certification, noting any reservations you may have.
AGAIN project is on creating a standardized way to place nursing students for clinical at Rasmussen College in Green Bay Wisconsin.  I have included all pertinant postings and papers thus far for reference.
